What are mini dental implants?

Mini implants are smaller in size than normal implants. The diameter measures less than 3 mm whilst the traditional ones measure 4 to 5mm. They are narrower, so that they fit into tight spaces, such as the case of an upper lateral incisor.
In respect of durability, and considering that they are made from titanium, they have the same longevity. Resistance comes from the length and not from the diameter. Still, many dentists do not trust that they will resist to such forces as shall normal implants. Hence their preference for the latter, in particular in the case of molar teeth.

The process of placing mini-implants is in all identical to that of other implants. It tends to be a little less time consuming. In both cases a small hole is opened in the bone, allowing the implant to be screwed in. Then they must passively await the bone-integration process to occur, this process being faster in mini-implants. In a second step, the artificial tooth (false tooth) is attached to the top of the implant.

The surgical procedure takes approximately 1 to 2 hours. It is usually painless and done under local anaesthesia. Any discomfort tends to disappear within 48 hours. Although more than often, there is no discomfort. Due to the smaller diameter and taking less time to implant, the cost of mini-implants is half, or even less than this, when compared to traditional implants.
In addition, patients who were not eligible for "normal" implants, may be eligible for mini dental implants.

Why are they not always used?

The smaller diameter requires better planning and positioning for distribution of masticatory loads. Many dentists resist placing these because they are more familiar with the conventional implants and due to this, they become somewhat sceptical to use them. Of course, there are cases that can be disregarded, such as when side forces are involved. As such, it is often inadvisable to support dental bridges and prosthetic crowns on molar teeth. Nevertheless, they work very well as retainers for acrylic dentures.
In general they present greater risks for implant failures, therefore should be used with caution. Immediate loading of mini implants is not recommended.

Note: do not confuse mini implant with short implant, they are different implants.

Mini implant cost

Conventional implants came first. Mini-implants are a relatively 'new' product that has its own field of application and its use should not be devalued. Be sure to speak to your dentist about this less costly solution. The cost of implant treatment with mini implants is about 65% less than with normal implants. Comes around $ 1,000.00 per unit.
